Rats (Rattus norvegicus)

It is said there are 70 million rats in the UK, more than the human population! Over 80% of rat infestations in London originate from sewers. They inhabit domestic lofts, gardens, railway embankments, farms and riverbanks, and are very good burrowers. The common species of rat found in the UK is the Brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) less common is the Black rat, also known as the Ship rat, which is very rare. Rats are nocturnal animals and are 'neophobic' which means they have a fear of new objects. This can undermine the early stages of treatment. Rats continually dribble urine which can carry several diseases, including Leptospirosis, murine typhus and cryptosporidium (a cause of gastroenteritis) as well as Salmonella bacteria. They can be hazadous to your property as well as to your health, because their teeth grow up to 50mm per year so they are continually gnawing pipes, electric cables and wooden joists. Rats reach sexual maturity around 2-3 months. Females can have up to 7 litters per year, averaging 8 offspring per litter. Adult rats live for 9 to 18 months. Treatment for Rats An initial inspection and risk assessment is carried out, then anticoagulant rodenticide is laid in lockable bait boxes to the affected areas. We then carry out a follow-up treatment. If further treatment is required this is carried out free of charge. We also advise clients of any proofing that could be done to reduce further infestations. We can carry out this work if required at a small extra cost.
